Lecz Wallace potrafi opowiadać o samozatracającym się świecie w taki sposób, jak nikt inny. W 2012 r. ta wyjątkowa książka znalazła się w finale Nagrody Pulitzera. W 2008 roku pogrążony w depresji David Foster Wallace odebrał sobie życie. Blady Król był wtedy stertą notatek i zbiorem plików w komputerze. W chaosie luźnych rozdziałów i ich rozmaitych wersji odnaleziono opowieść, ostatnią historię w dorobku autora. Kształcił się na Uniwersytecie Arizony oraz Harvardzie, gdzie studiował filologię angielską, filozofię, a później pisanie kreatywne. Zadebiutował w 1987 roku powieścią The Broom of the System. Za szczytowe osiągnięcie pisarza uznaje się powieść Infinite Jest (1996, wydanie polskie w przygotowaniu), dzieło przełomowe dla literatury amerykańskiej. Na dorobek literacki autora składa się ponadto wiele opowiadań – w Polsce dostępnych w zbiorach: Krótkie wywiady z paskudnymi ludźmi (1997, W.A.B. 2015) oraz Niepamięć (2004, W.A.B. 2017) – a także liczne eseje, spośród których polskiego wydania doczekał się zbiór Rzekomo fajna rzecz, której nigdy więcej nie zrobię (1996, W.A.B. 2016). Krótko po premierze Infinite Jest Wallace rozpoczął pracę nad trzecią powieścią – Bladym Królem – której jednak nigdy nie ukończył. We wrześniu 2008 roku, po długoletnich zmaganiach z depresją, popełnił samobójstwo. Książka ukazała się w 2011 roku, a rok później znalazła się w gronie finalistów Nagrody Pulitzera.
